Contemporary Renewal of the De Riekerhof Residential and Care Complex
De Riekerhof residential and care complex in Overtoomse Veld (Amsterdam Nieuw-West) will soon undergo a complete renovation to make it future-proof. We are transforming this outdated 1970s building into a contemporary residential-care complex featuring senior apartments, new amenities, and a green, inviting living environment.
The design is by Boparai Associates Architects, with a landscape plan by MOSS Amsterdam.
De Riekerhof, built around 1975 as part of the General Expansion Plan (Algemeen Uitbreidingsplan / AUP), has long provided housing for elderly residents requiring care. With the renovation, this iconic building will be given a second life, continuing to serve as an important facility for vulnerable residents and independently living seniors in the neighborhood. The renewal aligns with the urban redevelopment objectives in Amsterdam Nieuw-West.
The existing concrete frame will be preserved and will form the basis for the new construction. We are expanding the existing volume by adding two extra floors. In the new configuration, we will be able to accommodate 146 two-room rental apartments, including 29 intramural care units and 124 senior apartments (avg. 60 m²) on the upper seven floors, all with private balconies.
On the ground floor, the following will be included:
An atrium with an inner courtyard on the north side will serve as a bright entrance area and meeting place, enhancing the connection with the public space. The new south façade will feature generous floor-to-ceiling glass. Living rooms will face the outdoor (sunny) side, while bedrooms will be oriented toward the quiet atrium side.
De Riekerhof will have a calm, timeless appearance, featuring light sand-colored brick, brown-gray aluminum window frames, and warm wooden accents on balconies and galleries. The landscape design connects the front and rear squares, with the atrium serving as the central link. Roof gardens, ornamental grasses, shrubs, and trees contribute to a pleasant living environment, promote biodiversity, and enhance the overall quality of stay for residents and visitors.
